As I write this, Earth Hour has come and gone for the Eastern US coast. I can’t speak for others in my community, or anyone else along the eastern seaboard, but we did indeed plunge ourselves into total electrical darkness. We simply played cards by candlelight, as we did last year. How did the rest of the world fare? In one week, people around the globe will be plunging themselves into total darkness to celebrate Earth Hour. Earth Hour is one of the WWF’s global initiatives. It’s also the largest climate change event in history. Last year’s event had over 4,000 cities around the globe participating—including 80 million people from the US alone! Even extremely well-known landmarks and tourist destinations have gone completely dark for this big event, including: The Golden Gate Bridge, The Great Pyramids of Giza, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, Sydney’s Opera House, The Eiffel Tower, and even the Las Vegas Strip! Set your calendar aside for March 27th because another big climate change event is planned for that night. Earth Hour is set to return for another year, as millions of people across the globe switch off their lights for one hour in an annual campaign held to show the effects of climate change. At least 250 cities have already signed up for the event this year.
