Ethically it always bothered me that dogs are for sale. Even being a “dog owner” annoys me. Often, when I talk about our Labrador Flex, I’ll refer to myself and my husband as his “baasjes”, a common Dutch denominator that is hard to translate but means something like “little bosses of”. And that’s how I see us, as the people responsible for his well being, health and happiness. Although I know he has no “real” freedom and is in essence subjected to our will and power, we try to provide him and ourselves with a sense of it. To achieve…

I can’t really believe it, but South Korea is going to use goldfish to make sure toilet water is clean at this week’s G20 summit taking place in the country. Six goldfish will be placed in the water tanks supplying water to the toilets, to make sure the water is pure and harmless for the G20 summit participants. When I heard the news I was sure animal welfare organizations would take a stand against this, and indeed they have. PETA has expressed concerns about the plans stating that protecting world leaders is important, but should not be at the cost…

During the last few days the British press has run some relatively prominent articles once again highlighting the correlation between meat eating and climate change, also resulting in a few additional commentary pieces and the usual backlash. Perhaps biggest of all is the Observer Food Monthly magazine’s OFM vegetarian recipe special edited by none other than the McCartney family (Sir Paul, Mary and Stella). Far from simply a collection of recipes – including several from Gwyneth Paltrow and other veggie celebs – the OFM special contains interviews with each of the three McCartneys, plus one piece that specifically connects environmentalism…

The United Nation’s World Water Day, which was on Monday, didn’t get as much press or attention as it deserved. What with the monumental passing of the healthcare reform bill in the United States, water had to take a back seat. But I’m attempting to revive World Water Day with this humble post, in some small attempt to give a little attention to the importance of the availability of clean water and sustainable water use. Please, PLEASE watch ‘The Story of Bottled water’. I already posted the video on Monday, but it just needs to be seen by at least…

Groundhog Day is around the corner and if you happen to be a Groundhog Day enthusiast, you may have heard of Punxsutawney Phil. Punxsutawney is a small town in southwestern Pennsylvania. Punxsutawney Phil would be their famed resident groundhog. This groundhog has been depicted in the movie Groundhog Day, had a race held in his honor by Bam Margera, and actually lives a better life than some people. Phil is responsible for the well-known groundhog tradition: if he sees his shadow, it means 6 more weeks of winter; if he doesn’t see his shadow, we’ll have an early spring. Carrying…

It would seem that a couple of updates are in order for two previous articles I posted on PETA. One of the articles mentioned yet another court case involving PETA. To make a long story short, an exotic animal company (US Global Exotics) was believed to be neglecting and mistreating the animals in their care. PETA sent in an undercover investigator to dig up any information they could on possible animal abuse. Proof was found and over 20,000 animals were taken from the exotic animal company. The company took PETA to court in an attempt to regain the animals, basically…

' src='http://gf3.statico.be/wp-content/themes/greenfudge/thumbnails/4441.jpg' alt='petas-new-anti-fur-ad-may-come-with-a-price' class='art-teaser' width='95' height='95' /> PETA has been making headlines a lot this week and so far it hasn’t been for good reasons. First, they’ve been taken to court over a dispute with US Global Exotics—a company that specializes in the worldwide delivery of exotic animals. Now, they may have one upset First Lady on their hands. Why? PETA used an image of Michelle Obama in their latest anti-fur ad—without her permission. Ingrid Newkirk, president of PETA, claims that her organization would not have sought Obama’s consent for the ad because it knows that she can’t make such an endorsement. Apparently, they included Obama’s image…

PETA: An organization that promotes the ethical treatment of animals—or is it? Over the years, PETA has faced a lot of complaints, controversy and lawsuits that would strongly suggest they are not quite the animal lovers they claim to be and it would seem that they’ve found themselves in the hot seat yet again. U.S. Global Exotics—a company that specializes in global delivery of exotic animals—has taken PETA to court in an attempt to regain custody of more than 26,000 animals seized by the city on December 15th. PETA suspected that US Global Exotics were mistreating the animals in their…

Remember those rumors a few years ago about Kentucky Fried Chicken changing its name to KFC because it no longer used actual chickens, but rather some ghastly headless lab-grown creatures kept alive by tubes? Well those rumors were true. OK, they weren’t. But in a bizarre twist of technological fate, scientists are now developing lab-cultured “in-vitro meat” as a less expensive, healthier and more eco-friendly alternative to conventional livestock farming. This is eerily – and I admit as a huge scifi fan, somewhat excitingly – reminiscent of Star Trek: The Next Generation, in which the crew of the starship Enterprise…
