Videos: Etna erupts, wildfires in NZ and OZ and Sea Shepherd vs. Japanese whalers

videos-etna-erupts-wildfires-in-nz-and-oz-and-sea-shepherd-vs-japanese-whalers

Leave it to ITN to come up with some short and (sometimes) sweet videos with which to catch up on some of the week’s environmental news. We’ve gathered three (yes, three) bite-sized eco-news reports in one place. Why? Because, like the Mouseketeers, we like you! First, check out Italy’s Mount Etna as she spectacularly spews forth molten lava and ash into the Sicilian sky. Next there’s a report on antipodean wildfires raging across New Zealand and Australia. Finally, Sea Shepherd and Japanese whalers fight for both whale rights and whaling rights on the high seas. Guess who fights for which.

Japan: Tsunami aid used to fuel whale hunt

japan-tsunami-aid-used-to-fuel-whale-hunt

2.3bn yen ($29 million/ €22 million) in victims’ aid for the March 11 tsunami, which devastated communities on the northeastern coast of Japan, has been diverted to the country’s whaling industry. This discovery has sparked outrage from environmentalist groups like Greenpeace and Sea Shepherd and could further damage Japan’s international reputation. Junichi Sato, executive director for Greenpeace Japan, is quoted in the Independent: Not only is the whaling industry unable to survive without large increases in government handouts, now it’s siphoning money away from the victims of the 11 March triple disaster, at a time when they need it most….

Sea Shepherd’s Flagship Vessel the Steve Irwin finally released!

sea-shepherds-flagship-vessel-the-steve-irwin-finally-released

Thanks to generous donations and support from all over the world, the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society has been able to raise over $735,000 (about € 515.000) to save the flagship Steve Irwin—less than two weeks after the launch of their SOS! – Save Our Ship fundraising campaign! On July 15th, the Steve Irwin was detained in the Scottish Shetland Islands pending the Sea Shepherd’s ability to fund a bond estimated to be in the amount of $1,411,692.87 (about €990.000). The detainment was ordered by British courts due to a civil lawsuit brought against the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society by Maltese…

Whales and Dolphins Killed in Taiji’s Cove, Despite Ongoing Presence of Activists

whales-and-dolphins-killed-in-taijis-cove-despite-ongoing-presence-of-activists

“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.” -Mahatma Gandhi The beginning of September typically marks the beginning of the dolphin hunt in Taiji, Japan—where the award-winning documentary, The Cove, was based. However, this month proved to be much different. Ric O’Barry, his son, Lincoln, Sea Shepherd, and a whole group of activists have made their way to Japan to protest the dolphin hunt. It was basically believed that as long as they (the activists) maintained a presence in Taiji and kept at least some media attention on the…

Sea Shepherd Updates: An Interesting Turn of Events

sea-shepherd-updates-an-interesting-turn-of-events

One interesting turn of events certainly deserves another. Last week, it was announced that anti-whaling activist, Captain Pete Bethune, would be heading back to his New Zealand home. The Japanese court sentenced him to 2 years in jail, but that sentence was also suspended for 5 years, which means if he can stay out of trouble with Japanese authorities for the next 5 years, he will continue to be a free man. Over the weekend, it was announced that Bethune was deported by Japan back to New Zealand. Upon his release, Bethune commented that he would never stop fighting Japanese…

Breaking News: Captain Pete Bethune is Free to Go Home!

breaking-news-captain-pete-bethune-is-free-to-go-home

We all know of the ongoing feud between Sea Shepherd and the Japanese whalers. We all know that Captain Pete Bethune was arrested and put on trial, but none of the Japanese were (even though it was Bethune’s ship  that was destroyed). And despite all the loyal Sea Shepherd supporters, we all expected the trial to turn for the worst. Well, as it turns out, we were all wrong. Captain Peter Bethune is officially a free man–well, at least for 5 years. Bethune received a 2 year jail sentence for obstructing the whaling fleet and for assault with the butyric…

IWC Whaling Conference = Epic Fail; Captain Paul Watson of Sea Shepherd Wanted by Interpol

iwc-whaling-conference-epic-fail-captain-paul-watson-of-sea-shepherd-wanted-by-interpol

It seems that whenever there is a major (or at least rather anticipated) conference or meeting that is supposed to solve some ongoing environmental issue, it always fails. Either the people at the meeting can’t agree on anything and it’s all called off, or they scrap up some last minute deal that really amounts to nothing, or the decision is postponed for 6 month to a year (or longer). The latest IWC whaling conference in Morocco is no different. Nothing was resolved at the meeting and it turned into a rather ridiculous set of negotiations and trade offs. The main…

Survival of bluefin tuna in the hands of activists

survival-of-bluefin-tuna-in-the-hands-of-activists

Sea Shepherd recently freed 800 threatened bluefin tuna from the nets of fishing vessels operating in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Libya. The crew of the Steve Irwin vessel threw rotten butter onto the crew of a Maltese ship after being rammed; then proceeded to examine the contents of their underwater cages. The Sea Shepherd activists then released the overstocked catch, which contained many juvenile tuna. It is the opinion of Sea Shepherd that political efforts have failed and it is private citizens who must act to save the bluefin. Steve Irwin crew member Wietse van der Werf…

Many Updates in the World of Whaling

many-updates-in-the-world-of-whaling

The whaling issue is creeping back into the news more often again and this article is no exception. In recent news, Australia announced plans to take legal action against Japanese whaling, which includes the involvement of the International Court of Justice (ICJ). It has been known for a long time that Australia has an issue with Japan’s whaling, especially in the Southern Ocean and their decision comes after a series of rather critical events, including the Sea Shepherd incident, a 6-week scientific research study and countless failed negotiations through the IWC. Speaking of the IWC, their much anticipated Morocco meeting…

The latest season of Whale Wars was nothing short of chaotic. To make a long story short: the Ady Gil was destroyed and now rests at the bottom of the sea, a gash was torn through part of the Bob Barker, annoyance tactics (on either side) included used of the LRAD system, pepper spray, dangling ropes, water cannons, throwing bombs made from butyric acid (rancid butter), red paint, and your typical game of cat and mouse. Sea Shepherd successfully kept the Japanese from killing or processing any whales for about a month (if not longer), but unfortunately, one of their…

Sea Shepherd Updates: The Good, The Bad, and The Fishy

sea-shepherd-updates-the-good-the-bad-and-the-fishy

The whaling season has ended, but there is still much happening in the world of the Sea Shepherd crew. First, if you’ve been following the news, you’ll know that the captain of the Ady Gil, Pete Bethune, hopped aboard the Shonan Maru #2 last month to make a citizen’s arrest of their captain and issue a $3 million dollar damages bill for the destruction of his ship. Well, that plan backfired: Bethune was detained aboard the ship and taken to Japan, where he was arrested by the Japanese coast guard yesterday upon his arrival. Luckily for Bethune, however, Sea Shepherd…

Ady Gil Captain Faces Arrest in Japan

ady-gil-captain-faces-arrest-in-japan

Two months ago, the Ady Gil was rammed, severed in half, and destroyed. About a month ago, Captain Pete Bethune of the Ady Gil, jumped aboard the Shonan Maru #2, with the intentions of handing over a bill for the cost of his ship plus making a citizen’s arrest of the Shonan Maru #2’s captain. However, the attempt was futile and resulted in Captain Bethune being held captive aboard the Japanese ship. Now, the Shonan Maru #2 is moving ever closer to Japan—and to Captain Bethune’s arrest. The Japanese Coast Guard is currently waiting for the Shonan Maru #2’s arrival,…

Australian Police Search Sea Shepherd Vessels

australian-police-search-sea-shepherd-vessels

The law works in mysterious ways, especially when it comes to the Sea Shepherd crew. Yesterday, the Steve Irwin and Bob Barker arrived in Tasmania. Both vessels were immediately searched by Australian police, at the request of Japanese authorities. Although the police had a search warrant, none of them would divulge and details of the warrant or reasons behind why the search was requested in the first place. In regards to the search, Captain Paul Watson stated: “They’ve already seized log books, videos, photographs, charts, GPS recordings and copies of the computer hard drives.” … “There’s nothing I would love…

Sea Shepherd’s Operation: Waltzing Matilda Campaign Comes to an End

sea-shepherd%e2%80%99s-operation-waltzing-matilda-campaign-comes-to-an-end

Yesterday, it was announced on the official Sea Shepherd blog that they are bringing this year’s whaling campaign to an end. With one ship sunk and the Steve Irwin heading back to port, that only left the Bob Barker left to contend with the whalers. Fortunately, there were hardly any of the Japanese ships left to contend with. The Shonan Maru #2 is currently making its way to Japan, with Ady Gil Captain Pete Bethune held prisoner aboard the ship. The Yushin Maru #3 finally decided to come out of hiding on Wednesday and the Bob Barker was there to…

A Few Updates in the Crazy World of Japanese Whaling

a-few-updates-in-the-crazy-world-of-japanese-whaling

The Japanese whaling season in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary is drawing to a close. Sea Shepherd has managed to keep the Japanese from killing any whale for the past 19 days and it looks to stay that way until their campaign ends. On an even more positive note, there has been no further ship damage to speak of. Things seem to have quieted down considerably on the frontlines. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of diplomacy or court cases. As a start, there is a particular pair of Greenpeace Japan activists that have made headlines quite often this past…

Australian Prime Minister Threatens Japanese Whaling Program with Legal Action

australian-prime-minister-threatens-japanese-whaling-program-with-legal-action

In an effort to finally put a stop to the whaling in the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary, Australian Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, issued a November deadline for Japan to stop their research whaling program. The whaling program is sponsored by the Institute for Cetacean Research and while it’s possible a portion of the whales might be used for research, most of the meat ends up sold for consumption. Many people believe the selling of the meat is the true reason why the Japanese are whaling in the Antarctic, even though commercial whaling was banned by the International Whaling Commission in…

Breaking News: Sea Shepherd Successfully Escorts Japanese Out of Whale Sanctuary!

breaking-news-sea-shepherd-successfully-escorts-japanese-out-of-whale-sanctuary

I am happy to announce that the Sea Shepherd crew have finally managed to successfully escort the majority of the Japanese whaling fleet out of the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary! While there has not been any further sighting of the Yushin Maru 3 since the collision last week, Sea Shepherd managed to get the other 4 remaining Japanese ships–Nisshin Maru, Shonan Maru No. 2, Yushin Maru 1, Yushin Maru 2–north of the 60 degrees line and continue to head on a north by northwest direction. Bob Barker captain, Chuck Swift, stated: “We intend to keep on their tail and to…

Sea Shepherd Successfully Shuts Down Japanese Whaling for 3 Days Thus Far

sea-shepherd-successfully-shuts-down-japanese-whaling-for-3-days-thus-far

Is Sea Shepherd finally successful in shutting down this year’s Japanese whaling campaign? Maybe. For 3 days now, the Japanese have been unable to kill a single whale. Sea Shepherd’s 2 remaining ships, Steve Irwin and Bob Barker, have been closely tailing the Nisshin Maru—Japan’s factory ship. They are currently on a northeastwardly pursuit and have enough fuel to last a month. According to their website: “Not a single whale has died since the Bob Barker intercepted the fleet at 0100 Hours on February 6th. It is now the third day that the whaling fleet has been unable to kill…

Breaking News: Japanese Harpoon Vessel Collides with Bob Barker of the Sea Shepherd Fleet

breaking-news-japanese-harpoon-vessel-collides-with-bob-barker-of-the-sea-shepherd-fleet

Right when you think: ‘things couldn’t get any worse’, another clash between the Sea Shepherd crew and the Japanese happens. The Japanese harpoon ship Yushin Maru No. 3 collided with Sea Shepherd’s latest fleet addition, Bob Barker. The collision tore a 3 foot, 4 inch (1 meter) deep hole above the waterline of Bob Barker’s hull. The good news is nobody was hurt. The bad news is (at least for the Japanese) the incident occurred off Cape Darnley, part of the Bjerko Peninsula—in Australian Antarctic waters. The Japanese were officially banned from whaling in Australian waters (pdf). If they were,…

Sea Shepherd Update: New Zealand and Australia Finally Investigate Crash

sea-shepherd-update-new-zealand-and-australia-finally-investigate-crash

Earlier this month, there was an incident involving the Ady Gil vessel (of the Sea Shepherd fleet) and the Shonan Maru No. 2 (which is with the Japanese whalers). To make a long explanation very short, the Shonan Maru No. 2 rammed the Ady Gil, causing irreparable damage to the vessel and now the Ady Gil is somewhere on the ocean floor. Both sides blame each other for the crash and some form of official intervention is needed. Now that we are more or less up to speed on things, here is where the update on matters begins. Recently, the…
